China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company (COSCO) and China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC)
have reached an agreement to transform Xiamen Yuanhai Container Terminal into China’s first fully automated terminal.
The project is part of Xiamen’s efforts to turn the port city into southeast China’s premier container hub, according to a report in Xiamen Daily Sunday.
Developers will install the latest automated loading and unloading technologies, to create China’s first commercially-operated, zero-emission, and fully automated terminal.
Upon completion the Yuanhai terminal is expected to increase its throughput capacity by up to 70 percent.
The Xiamen Yuanhai Container Terminal, a joint-venture between COSCO Pacific and Xiamen's Haicang Investment Group, became fully operational in December of last year.
The terminal, located in the Haicang Port area in Xiamen, consists of four deepwater berths, boasting a depth of 17 meters.
The four berths, nos. 14 to 17, have an optimum capacity of 2.8 million TEU, according to COSCO Pacific.
