Algeria’s wheat imports dropped by almost 13 percent to 1.44 million metric tons in the first quarter of 2012 compared with 1.65 million tons in the same period last year, according to customs data.
Out of the total amount imported, 1.06 million tons was soft wheat, and the rest was durum wheat, according to a customs service document obtained today.
The biggest suppliers of wheat to Algeria during the period included France, Argentina and Canada. The Agriculture Ministry said on April 8 it expects the country’s wheat production to climb to 5.5 million tons this year, a 31 percent increase from 2011.
