German yard beefs up repair sector

Tuesday, 12 June 2012 | 11:37
German shipyard Nobiskrug is beefing up its already potent repair and conversion activities in all sectors and has appointed a new manager to head up the expansion, writes Tom Todd.
The yard, on the Kiel Canal in Rendsburg, has brought in experienced engineer Bernd Wittorf, former head of Rolls-Royce Marine Deutschland, to take over the repair and conversion division at the yard, which is part of the Abu Dhabi MAR Group
Praising Wittorf's experience in the sector, Nobiskrug MD Holger Kahl told The Motorship "this appointment underscores our increased engagement in repair and conversion in the naval sector, in merchant shipping and in yachts".
Kahl added: "The repair and conversion of big ocean-going ships has been a core competence of our shipyard for a long time and we now want to expand it even further"
Nobiskrug has specialised in recent years in the newbuilding and repair of private luxury yachts and naval surface ships of more than 60m length. It has for some time co-operated closely with and utilised the extensive dock and pier capacities of fellow Abu Dhabi shipyard, the former HDW-Gaarden in Kiel at the north-eastern end of the Kiel Canal.
Kahl said "the co-operation with Abu Dhabi MAR in Kiel has enabled us to make more dock and pier capacity available for our clients".
