China will step up policy fine-tuning to support the economy, which faces increasing downward pressures, Premier Wen Jiabao said at a regular cabinet meeting.
"China's domestic economy is still facing some protruding problems and particularly the downward economic pressure is increasing," Wen said in remarks published on the central government's website, www.gov.cn.
A spate of data for April pointed to slower growth in the face of external headwinds that pushed growth in the first quarter down to 8.1 percent, its slowest pace in almost three years.
