The Beirut International Chamber of Navigation, an official representative of 45 shipping agencies operating at the Port of Beirut, said it was upbeat about the port’s results despite turbulence in region.
“We are relieved about the good results the port is still achieving despite of the local and regional turmoil,” said Elie Zakhour, the head of the chamber.
The organization said container shipment activities at the port continue to thrive after crossing the 1 million containers mark last year.
The chamber expected the completion of upgrade works on the container terminal at the end of 2012, a step vital to alleviate traffic.
“The upgrade will also emphasize the importance of the port as a regional hub of transshipment,” Zakhour added.
