Cologne throughput stays on level

Thanks to a good first six months, the port throughput of the ’Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln’ (HGK) in 2011 ended up at about the same level as in 2010. The rail transport did post a profit.
Port
The HGK port throughput dropped from 12.7 million tonnes in 2010 to 12.4 million tonnes in 2011. Within that figure, the container throughput in Köln-Niehl improved, from 507,000 to 514,000 TEU. The obstruction of the Rhine at Sankt Goarshausen and two periods of low water impeded strong growth.
Rail
HGK’s performance in cargo transport by rail grew by about 10 per cent, from 13.1 to 14.4 million tonnes in 2011. The interregional traffic especially developed successfully. HGK believes it can grow further in this transport in 2012.
