Aim/Objectives:
The course explains the basics of Class and statutory rules as well as their implication on the operation of the vessel, explanation of MARPOL-SOLAS and latest requirements, practical approach to structural problems, ISM & ISPS, machinery survey schemes, as well as elements of Port State Control.

Contents/Main Topics:
· Class concept and Class Systematics
· Class & Statutory Rules
· Machinery Surveys (damages, survey arrangements)
· Hull strength, damages, inspection
· MARPOL (Annex I, IV, V, VI)
· SOLAS (overview, last update)
· ISM, ISPS & MLC/Quality Assurance in Shipping
· Port State Control

Learning Objectives:
· The interrelation between ship owners, Class Societies, Insurers, Flag Authorities and last but not least Port State Authorities.
· The Role of Class Societies
· How Class works and how to find related information.
· Practical implications of statutory regulations and important issues in Rules and Regulations to come.
· A practical understanding of the hull strength, stresses, corrosion and fatigue.
· Hull and Machinery surveillance schemes.
· Management systems, ISM & ISPS.

Who should attend:
· Superintendents, Newbuilding project responsible and Ships’ Officers.
· Personnel in Operations, Technical, Quality & Safety Departments.
· Individuals seeking knowledge on the Classification concepts, basic statutory concept and requirements (SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Line, etc.)

Pre-requisites:
It is assumed that the target group holds significant competence prior to course and many issues must be seen as clarifications, refreshing and updates.

Teaching Method:
The course is a combination of lectures, case discussions and interaction among participants.
Active involvement will add to the learning and will be dependent upon the open sharing of shipping industry experience.
