Iran has begun building four oil tankers for Venezuela, the latest in strengthening ties between the U.S. rivals. Habib Jadidi, managing director of the Iran Marine Industrial Co., also known as Sadra,
was quoted Thursday by state-run Press TV as saying the 113,000 metric
ton, Aframax-class vessels are part of a deal signed between Iran and
Venezuela in 2007.
The announcement comes just weeks after Venezuela's president was in Tehran for a meeting with his Iranian counterpart.
Earlier this month, Iranian media reported that Venezuela agreed to
export 20,000 barrels per day of gasoline to Iran, amid threats by the
West to impose fuel sanctions over Iran's contested nuclear program.
