Despite slowdown in shipbuilding industry globally, the Chinese shipbuilding industry has been continuously growing at a descent pace in the backdrop of continuously increasing foreign trade,
low labor cost and strong government support. It is expected that China
will account for more than 50% of the global order book by 2012, says a
new research report “China Shipbuilding Industry Forecast” released by
RNCOS.
The market has responded very positively in recent time when other
major industries feeling the heat of economic slowdown. For example –
the county built 12.33 Million DWT (Dead Weight Tons) of new ships in
July 2009, growth of more than 60% over the same month last year.
Our findings show that China’s government has played an active role in
boosting the shipbuilding industry during the odd times of global
financial crisis. The government has announced a series of new measures
to boost the industry, which showed signs of deceleration on account of
challenges emanated from the global financial turmoil. The government
has approved a stimulus package for the industry in a bid to help the
emerging sector better weather this challenge and return to its normal
growth rate. Besides, the government is encouraging financial
institutions to lend more to ship buyers and offer incentives for
purchasers of ocean-going ships.
As per our research, around 90% of international trade moves by sea and
recently China has become the world's largest exporter after surpassing
Germany by exporting goods worth US$ 521.7 Billion in the first half of
2009. Hence, this growing import and export activities will create huge
potential for the shipbuilding industry in China and its share in the
global vessels production is expected to reach around 40% by 2012 from
29.5% in 2008.
