AVEVA Marine “œbuilds” the future of shipping

With shipbuilding design becoming ever so crucial for the future of ships, AVEVA’s solutions package towards shipbuilders across the world is powering up change and technology. With 85% of the top 50 shipbuilders being AVEVA Customers it’s more than clear that in one way or another, most of today’s modern vessels were designed using one or more of the group’s applications and modules.

Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide spoke with Mr. StΓ©phane NeuvΓ©glise, Product Strategy Manager – AVEVA Marine, on the company’s plans for the future, its current line of products, as well as the general trends currently prevailing in the shipbuilding sector.

Could you provide us with some useful details regarding the AVEVA Marine 12 Series solution you give your customers?

AVEVA Marine 12 provides a very comprehensive set of applications for marine Engineering & Design.

Important new features in AVEVA Marine 12 include:
Integrated Schematic and 3D Model.
Flexible choice of authoring tools for P&ID and process engineering applications.
The most productive integrated hull and outfitting applications for clash-free, production-friendly design and efficient assembly.
Automatic, accurate and complete data for parts manufacture.
Global data sharing and efficient concurrent, multi-site project execution
The greatest benefits of AVEVA Marine 12 are:

Efficient Early Design
AVEVA Marine’s powerful, open features
for collaborative working save time.

With the recent acquisition of the AVEVA MARS products for planning, materials and production, AVEVA has a complete Integrated Shipbuilding solution. The AVEVA Integrated Shipbuilding solution supports the entire shipyard lifecycle under one collaborative information management framework. This strategy acts to ensure that shipyards have the information, material and resource they need to make the right decisions at the right time.

Who are your principal clients sector-wise?

Large commercial and Navy shipyards worldwide

85% of the top 50 shipbuilders are AVEVA Customers

Shipyards engaged in both vessel and offshore projects

How has your product offering evolved through the years?

Continual progression (unlike most of our competitors). AVEVA’s product development philosophy is based on continuous improvement of our solutions, in order to ensure that our customers can take full advantage of the latest technology with minimum disruption to their business operations.

AVEVA Marine 12.0 is the result of the merger of the Tribon and PDMS software, leveraging two proven technologies.

AVEVA Marine 12.0 is now a mature product which is recognized by the market. It brings a number of significant improvements compared to Tribon M3 thanks to its user interface, database technology, and new user functionality. A number of AVEVA Tribon customers have already migrated to AVEVA Marine or have announced their plans to migrate.

New modules introduced in AVEVA Marine 12.0 (Hull Finite Element Modeller, and Mechanical Equipment Interface).

Later this year we will be releasing AVEVA Marine 12.1 with even more improvements.

Which are the latest trends towards that area of ship modernization?

We see a tendency for shipyards to move to both offshore and wind power markets as traditional shipbuilding markets have been very challenging over the last few years.

This means that there is a very strong demand for more interoperability between the Plant and Marine sectors. Since the AVEVA Plant and Marine product portfolios use the same technology, there is already an integrated management environment that spans the two industry sectors. A number of our Marine customers are exploiting this capability to expand their business into more Plant oriented offshore projects.

What other sectors does your group serve and with which types of solutions?

AVEVA provides engineering design and information management solutions to the oil and gas, pulp and paper, power, chemical, pharmaceutical and shipbuilding industries.

Our other solutions include:

AVEVA Plant, a set of integrated applications for plant engineering, design and design management. Now with AVEVA PDMS 12 and other 12 Series products, it provides the fastest, most productive and risk-free tool set to design, build and revamp plant of any size and complexity.

AVEVA NET is AVEVA’s flagship digital information hub that enables powerful information access and validation across disciplines, between organisations, and around the world. AVEVA NET is at the core of AVEVA’s project and asset lifecycle management strategy, providing a powerful ISO15926-compliant information management hub to control, link, evaluate and deliver all types of data and documents in a secure environment, regardless of application and format.

During 2010, AVEVA acquired the oil & gas business of ADB Systema, which included the WorkMate and Tech Info Manager (TIM) products for workflow and management of change (MoC). The WorkMate and TIM applications in combination with the AVEVA NET digital information hub and our design applications creates a comprehensive solution that addresses both project performance and asset performance requirements across the entire facility lifecycle.

Also in 2010, AVEVA acquired the MARS business from Logimatic Holding AS, which included the MARS application suite for planning, materials and production. AVEVA Marine, AVEVA MARS and AVEVA NET combine to create an Integrated Shipbuilding solution that is second to none in the industry.

How would you evaluate 2010 in terms of business growth?

AVEVA is a publically listed company on the London Stock Exchange. The Group reported pre-tax profits for the year ended March 2010 of GBP50 million on revenues of GBP148 million. We saw a solid performance in challenging market conditions focusing on our core strengths of supplying world class solutions and services to our customers in the Oil and Gas, Power and Marine markets.

As we enter 2011 what are your goals?

We will continue to strive to reach our goals that we set out at the beginning of our financial year:

Develop global networks ““ we will deliver the most advanced enabling technologies and close customer support through a steadily expanding global network of offices and strategic partnerships.

Leadership through progression ““ we continually deliver new technologies that provide ever-increasing business value across the entire project lifecycle. Many of these developments are carried out in collaboration with AVEVA’s customers, focusing on real needs, practical working methods and measurable benefits.

Collaboration through relationships – In today’s competitive engineering industries, success frequently comes from an ability to work in efficient collaborative relationships. It is now common to find businesses collaborating on one project while competing for another. AVEVA technology enables collaborative use of all types of project information, so that businesses can compete on innovation and their core competencies.

Will you be launching any new products anytime soon?

We will be launching AVEVA Marine 12.1 by mid-2011.
