Algoma Central Corporation Announces Strike by Canadian Merchant Services Guild

Algoma Central Corporation, a leading provider of marine transportation services, today announced that the Canadian Merchant Services Guild, which represents navigation and engineering officers on the Company’s domestic product tanker fleet, has launched a strike against the Company.

The union represents 54 employees of Algoma Tankers Limited. The union has provided assurance that the vessels affected by the strike will sail to a safe berth and be secured before the employees leave their posts.

Algoma Central Corporation operates the largest Canadian flag fleet of dry and liquid bulk carriers on the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Waterway, including self-unloading dry-bulk carriers, gearless dry bulk carriers and product tankers. Algoma also owns ocean self-unloading dry-bulk vessels operating in international markets. Algoma also provides ship management services for other ship owners. Algoma has begun an expansion into international short-sea markets through it 50% interests in NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers and NovaAlgoma Short-Sea Carriers.
