APM Terminal to operate new sustainable short-sea terminal in Gothenburg

Once the dedicated terminal is operational, APM Terminals Gothenburg will add a sustainable short-sea solution to its offering and become Sweden’s only full-service terminal. The terminal will provide a flexible and environmentally friendly intra-European cargo transport option.

The terminal will be located at the Skandiahamnen western quay, which was recently renovated and reinforced. Plans are currently being made to ensure the most efficient short-sea handling system possible. In addition to suitable storage and transloading facilities close to the quayside, the plan also includes capabilities for loading and unloading barges and smaller coastal vessels.

“We’re proud to be expanding our already wide portfolio with a sustainable and competitive short-sea solution,” says Dennis Olesen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Nordic. “We can see that container shipping in Europe is growing in importance, so it’s only natural for us to provide our customers with an even more flexible service.”

Environmental focus
Since 2019, APM Terminals has been heavily investing in the Green Gothenburg Gateway, a project to enable efficient freight transportation with the least possible environmental impact. One important aspect of this work is to create the right conditions to move goods transport away from the already busy roads to ships.

According to Olesen, sea shipping plays a key role in effective and sustainable freight transportation within Europe: “This short-sea investment answers the market’s increased demand for climate-efficient transport perfectly.”

Elvir Dzanic, Gothenburg Port Authority’s Chief Executive, sees a similar trend. “With the pandemic, we’re seeing some new patterns in logistic flows with goods owners moving parts of their global production closer to Europe,” he says. “Short-sea is a growing segment and we’re pleased that APM Terminals is continuing to meet market needs with this investment, which also broadens the port’s total range.”

“APM Terminals is a global player with a strong local presence in the Nordic region as well as Europe,” concludes Olesen. “Our experiences from previous short-sea solutions have been positive. Intensive work is currently underway to identify and tailor our solutions to meet the needs of the Swedish market.”
