ASA’s new Chairman Elected

Mr Angad Banga of the Caravel Group was elected as new Chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSOA) on the 22 November 2023. Mr. Banga succeeded Mr. Wellington Koo, of Valles Steamship Co., Ltd, who stepped down after completing his two-year term as Chairman of the HKSOA.

Mr. Banga has also taken over the Chairmanship of Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA) at the same time. Mr. Wellington Koo, the outgoing Chairman, thanked ASA members for their support to him during his term.

Mr Banga will bring a wealth of experience and leadership to this pivotal role, and his tenure is anticipated to propel ASA to new heights in the maritime industry. In accepting his new role, Mr. Banga expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am honored to have the opportunity to lead ASA during this transformative period in the maritime sector. The challenges we face are significant, but so are the opportunities. Together, with the collective strength of our members, we will chart a course towards sustainable growth, technological advancement, and enhanced collaboration with in the Asian and the global shipping community.”

Mr Banga’s tenure as Chairman of ASA will come to an end on the day of ASA’s next AGM to be held in Hong Kong on 28 May 2024. ASA extends its gratitude to the outgoing Chairman, Mr Wellington Koo, for his invaluable contributions and leadership during his tenure.

The Asian Shipowners’ Association (ASA) is a voluntary organization of the shipowner associations of Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea and the Federation of ASEAN Shipowners’ Associations comprising shipping associations of ASEAN countries. The aims of the ASA are to promote the interests of Asian shipowners. Between annual ASA meetings, the ongoing work is carried out by five Standing Committees: The Seafarers Committee (SC), the Ship Insurance and Liability Committee (SILC), the Safe Navigation and Environment Committee (SNEC), the Shipping Policy Committee (SPC), and the Ship Recycling Committee (SRC). It has been estimated that ASA shipowners and managers control and operate around 50% of the world’s cargo carrying fleet.
