Bilbao moves forward in intermodality, innovation and sustainability

The Port of Bilbao continues with its efforts to become a green, competitive and responsible port that drives and accompanies its port customers to face the impacts derived from the energy transition, sustaining the competitiveness of the industry of the territory, adapting the infrastructures and services to their needs and requirements, with intermodality, innovation and sustainability as pillars for change.

Intermodality

SLP starts up the first rail service for bulk solids in the Port of Bilbao

A joint collaborative effort by Servicios Logísticos Portuarios (SLP), Harineras Villamayor, the Monzón Intermodal Terminal of the SAMCA Group, the Bilbao Port Authority and Renfe has made it possible to launch today the first rail service for the transport of bulk solids from the Port of Bilbao. The inaugural operation consisted of a convoy with 708 tonnes of wheat bound for Aragon.

Innovation

Bilbao Portlab has enabled 51 innovation projects to be taken forward in five years, tapping into the innovation ecosystem created in the Port of Bilbao

Five years have now passed since Bilbao PortLab was founded to provide support for businesses and organisations of the Bilbao port-logistics community in their transition towards a smarter, nimbler and more sustainable future. Throughout this time, the guiding concept has been open innovation, working both on projects generated internally and attracting others from outside.

Sustainability

The Council of Ministers approves the electrification of the docks of the port of Bilbao for onshore power supply to vessels for 55 million euros

The Council of Ministers of the Spanish Goverment, at the proposal of the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, has given the green light for the 55,403,509.78 euro investment for the development of the electrical infrastructure in the port of Bilbao to enable ships to connect to the onshore power grid when berthed.

As part of its energy transition plan towards a carbon neutral scenario in 2050, one of the main objectives of the Bilbao Port Authority is to reduce pollutant emissions from ships at berth and improve air quality in the port. To do so, the necessary infrastructure must be in place to enable the vessels to connect to the onshore power supply during their stay in the port of Bilbao, making it possible for them to switch off their auxiliary engines, as part of the BilbOPS project.
