Sustained efforts needed as global piracy incidents hit lowest levels in decades

The ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB) calls for efforts to be sustained worldwide as maritime piracy and armed robbery attacks reached their lowest recorded level in almost three decades. The ICC IMB’s annual report recorded 115 incidents of piracy and armed robbery against ships in 2022 – compared to 132 in 2021 – with half of them occurring in Southeast Asian waters, particularly in the Singapore Straits, where incidents continue to rise. Global piracy acts drop to 14-year low

Worldwide acts of piracy fell to their lowest level last year since statistics were first established in 2008, a maritime security body said this week. The Maritime Information Cooperation and Awareness Center (MICA), the France-based branch of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) which is headquartered in Malaysia, said there had been 300 reported acts of piracy and robbery last year. Indian Ocean High Risk Area for piracy to be removed on 1 January

At 00:01 UTC on 1 January 2023, the Shipping Industry Indian Ocean High Risk Area (HRA) for piracy will be removed.  The removal of the HRA reflects a significantly improved piracy situation in the region  Voyage preparation, threat, and risk assessment as part of following Best Management Practice 5 (BMP5) remain essential.  BMP5 reporting processes and the presence of international naval forces remains in place until further notice. Combating illicit maritime activity – next steps for Jeddah Amendment
