Celebrating the Day of the Seafarer 2019: “I Am On Board with gender equality”

INTERCARGO joins the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the international shipping community in celebrating the Day of the Seafarer on 25 June 2019 under the theme “I Am On Board with gender equality”. Our Association recognizes the unique contribution made by Seafarers, and also women Seafarers, to international seaborne trade, the world economy and society as a whole. INTERCARGO fully recognises that crew is the most important aspect of a ship’s operational excellence.

The Chairman of INTERCARGO, Dimitris Fafalios stressed the value that the Members of our Association put on our Seafarers and the many responsibilities entrusted to so few of them. Seafarers are our most important and “valuable assets”. Seafarers are and deserve to be at the centre of our attention, as INTERCARGO strives for safer and higher quality dry bulk shipping. Moreover, Seafarers deserve our special consideration in view of the great challenges shipping is faced with, as the industry will largely rely on their skills and responsible work aboard ships on the high seas to ensure a smooth implementation of new drastic requirements – with the transition to “2020 compliant-fuels” being imminent.

INTERCARGO also supports the IMO campaign’s emphasis on the importance and value of women within the professional ranks. With the World Maritime Day themed “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”, it is already clear that this message has a very strong and far-reaching resonance highlighting opportunities for women (as well as the contributions they are already making) in a wide range of maritime careers and professions – with the focus on seafaring.
