China Shenzhen Yantian port to boost 2025 LNG bunkering volume to 450,000 cu m

Shenzhen’s Yantian port, in Guangdong province, southern China, aims to boost its LNG bunkering volume to 450,000 cubic meters by 2025, representing a 50% increase from 2024, the Yantian district government said on its social media platform Jan. 14.

The port’s total LNG bunkering volume reached a record high of 300,000 cu m in 2024, nearly six times the volume from 2023, with contributions of 262,800 cu m from the state-owned PetroChina, and 34,700 cu m from the state-owned CNOOC, the Yantian government noted.

This positions Yantian as the second-largest port in China for LNG bunkering, data showed.

Yantian port serves as a crucial gateway for China’s import and export trade and is one of the world’s largest container terminals by single throughput, the local government said adding that it is the first port in China capable of simultaneously refueling two international ships with LNG within the same port area.

The port has actively responded to the national call for an energy revolution, utilizing its extensive routes to Europe and America and the concentration of LNG-powered ships to advance the construction of an international offshore LNG bonded bunkering center, the Yantian government said noting that this initiative has led to significant achievements in the LNG bunkering sector.

CNOOC said that the choice of Yantian port for LNG bunkering underscores the company’s service capabilities in the international LNG bunkering sector and emphasizes the port’s strategic position as a global shipping hub.

Yantian port began LNG bunkering for international ships on Nov. 22, 2022, and completed its first bonded LNG bunkering in January 2023. It is now the fourth port globally and the second in China capable of simultaneous loading and LNG bunkering operations.

LNG bunkering in China

As the number of LNG ships has increased in recent years, ports worldwide, including those in China, have been competing aggressively for the LNG bunkering market, industrial sources said.

In China, ports such as Shanghai Yangshan, Shenzhen Yantian, Ningbo Zhoushan, and Guangzhou have gradually launched bonded LNG bunkering operations both in-port and at offshore anchorages since 2022.

Yangshan Port in Shanghai City, eastern China, is currently the largest LNG bunkering port in the country. The port completed LNG bunkering for 76 ships in 2024, a 73% increase year-on-year, with a total volume of 444,000 cu m, making it the third largest port for LNG bunkering globally, the Shanghai Port Service Office said on its social media platform Jan. 8.

Rotterdam and Singapore are expected to be the top two ports for LNG bunkering volume in 2024, industrial sources said, but noting that Yangshan port previously surpassed Singapore to become the second-largest bonded LNG bunkering port globally in 2023.

Yangshan Port has commenced LNG bunkering business for international ships starting from March 2022, marking a significant milestone for China’s LNG bunkering capabilities, according to the Shanghai local government.

As of Dec. 23, 2024, Ningbo Zhoushan port in Zhejiang province, eastern China, had completed LNG bunkering for 14 ships, totaling over 60,000 cu m since its pilot LNG bunkering operations starting in June 2023, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Commerce said on its social media platform Dec. 24.

Additionally, CNOOC has also been conducting international ship bonded LNG bunkering operations at the Lantau Island anchorage of Guangzhou port, in southern Guangdong province, since August 2023. This initiative marks the establishment of a super LNG bunkering center in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, supported by CNOOC’s operations in both Guangzhou and Shenzhen ports, the company said earlier.

Apart from international ship LNG bunkering, CNOOC is also promoting LNG bunkering for inland ships in China. The company has partnered with the Guangdong provincial government and China Shipbuilding to advance LNG-powered ship transformation projects, establishing six LNG bunkering stations and ensuring fuel supply for LNG-powered ships in the Greater Bay Area as of May 2024, according to the company.
