Coalition Task Force Sentinel Conducts Joint Exercise in the Arabian Gulf

Coalition Task Force (CTF) Sentinel conducted its fourth iteration, this year, of combined exercise Sentinel Shield in the Arabian Gulf between the Royal Bahrain Naval Force, the Royal Saudi Naval Force, and the U.S. Navy, July 14.

During the exercise, Royal Bahrain Naval Force missile corvette Al-Manama (P 50), Royal Saudi Naval Force patrol boat Al-Farouq (513), and U.S. Navy guided-missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) tested communications systems and capabilities, communicated across multiple platforms to merchant ships, and conducted coordinated tactical maneuvers.

“The expertise our regional partners bring to these joint exercises is invaluable,” said Commodore Adrian Fryer, CTF Sentinel commanding officer. “These partners bring unique, extensive local knowledge and an ability to communicate effectively with the regional shipping industry and each other which is the lynchpin to this coalition’s success.”

Exercise Sentinel Shield is intended to increase the ability of CTF Sentinel partner nations to seamlessly operate together, growing their competencies in deterring state-sponsored malign activity around the region.

Capt. Joseph Baggett, commanding officer of USS Monterey, highlighted the importance of interoperability among CTF Sentinel partners for mission success.

“Consistent operations and training with regional partners is vital to enhancing the existing cooperative relationships between U.S. and Coalition forces,” said Baggett. “Each exercise fosters greater understanding between allied navies enabling them to sustain maritime domain awareness which safeguards the region’s vital links to the global economy.

CTF Sentinel is a multinational maritime effort to promote maritime stability, ensure safe passage, and enhance freedom of navigation throughout key waterways in the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Gulf of Oman.
