Drewry: World Container Index Up by 0.3% on Week, but 194.1% Year-on-Year

The composite index inched up 0.3% this week, and 194.1% up when compared with same period of 2020.

The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is $5,229 per 40ft container, which is $3,646 higher than the five-year average of $1,583 per 40ft container.

Drewry’s composite World Container index inched up 0.3% or $17 to $5,237.83 for a 40ft container, which is 194.1% higher than the same period in 2020. Freight rates on Shanghai-New York further surged $363 to stand at $6,748 for a 40ft box. Similarly, spot rates on Shanghai-Genoa increased $32 to come in at $8,412 per feu. Contrary to above, rates from Rotterdam to New York weakened $69 to $2,116 for a 40ft container and those on New York – Rotterdam decreased $27 to $663 for a 40ft box. Drewry expect rates to remain on higher side.
