Turning the Digital Tide

Not so long ago, the maritime sector was considered slow in “turning the digital tide”. However, recent events have demonstrated that no longer is this the case, and in fact shipping is now full steam ahead in embracing digitalisation.

Digital innovation is now firmly changing the way we operate. Trade and supply chains are becoming more transparent though technologies such as blockchain. In turn, data creation, usage and collection is becoming ever more important. This can be seen in mandatory requirements such as the IMO’s Convention of Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL Convention), but also with the recognition that it is data sharing and exchange that will help facilitate the goal of interoperability in the sector.

However – to achieve interoperability there are a number of steps that must first be met. Transparency and standards are central to this process, with integration and communication along the whole supply chain becoming increasingly important. With the rise in data exchange and increasingly automated systems also comes increased security risk – and with IMO cyber security compliance coming into effect from January 2021, shipping companies are under increasing pressure to ensure cyber preparedness. We will look at how recent events have propelled innovation even further, and to what end.
