Flettner Rotor for “Fehn Pollux”
Fehn Ship Management will install a Flettner rotor onboard the „Fehn Pollux“ next year. „We are considering alternative propulsion systems already for a long time,” says Matthias Hesse, managing Director of Fehnship. „We therefore didn’t hesitate when asked to participate in this project. We are determined to do everything possible to make the system a success.“ The rotor consists of a 18 meter high cylinder with a diameter of three meter. The construction has been completed in May 2015 and detailed tests ashore have been successfully completed.
The so called Eco Flettner WHC is a lightweight construction and uses a wide range of wind speeds to produce energy. The additional thrust gained from wind energy will reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions. The Eco Flettner WHC has been developed by partners of the German-Dutch INTERREG 4 A project Maritim, subproject “Wind Hybrid Coaster“.
