Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green: Leading the way into more sustainable shipping

Hapag-Lloyd’s Ship Green product offers businesses an innovative way to reduce their emissions footprint using sustainable biofuels, achieving over 200,000 TEUs shipped and preventing more than 150,000 tons of CO2e emissions in 2024. With over 750 customers adopting the program, including major global brands, Ship Green demonstrates the practicality and scalability of sustainable shipping solutions. Committed to achieving a net-zero fleet by 2045, Hapag-Lloyd is paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future in the maritime industry.
A tailored approach to emissions reduction
Addressing today’s environmental challenges demands innovative and impactful solutions, and Hapag-Lloyd has taken a significant step forward with its Ship Green product. This pioneering initiative reflects our commitment to sustainable shipping by providing businesses with a tangible way to reduce their carbon footprint. As 2024 comes to a close, the results speak for themselves: over 200,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) have been transported using Ship Green, preventing more than 150,000 tons of CO2e emissions.
At the heart of Ship Green lies a simple yet powerful concept: enabling businesses to reduce their ocean-leg emissions using biofuels. Customers can choose between 25%, 50%, or even 100% CO2e emissions reduction, tailoring their commitment to sustainability. Whether for standard containers, refrigerated units, or tank containers, Ship Green makes sustainable shipping accessible across industries.
Sustainable shipping made seamless
The beauty of Ship Green lies in its seamless integration. With just a few steps, customers can decarbonize their supply chains. Hapag-Lloyd only uses biofuel from 2nd-generation feedstock sourced from certified supply chains and produced from waste material, such as brown grease or used cooking oil. This ensures that no edible virgin oils are included in the fuel. The avoided emissions are allocated to shipments with the so-called “book and claim” chain of custody, meaning that Hapag-Lloyd can attribute avoided CO2e emissions to all ocean-leg transports regardless of the vessel and route used.
Committed to Net-Zero by 2045
The progress achieved in 2024 is only the beginning. Further steps need to be taken to reduce the carbon footprint of the shipping industry: In this context, Hapag-Lloyd has committed to the ambitious goal of operating a net-zero fleet by 2045. To achieve this, Hapag-Lloyd is investing in low-emission technologies, retrofitting ships, and exploring alternative fuels. The success of Ship Green highlights what can be achieved when innovation meets collaboration and environmental awareness. As more businesses join this movement, the maritime industry is on a good path towards more sustainable shipping, where we at Hapag-Lloyd are committed to taking a leading role.
