India’s wheat exports double during April-September

Despite restrictions imposed by the Indian federal government in May, India’s wheat exports more than doubled to 1.48 billion U.S. dollars during April-September this year, said the official data released on Wednesday.

According to the data, wheat exports registered an increase of 136 percent during the second quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal year.

“Wheat export rose to 1.48 billion U.S. dollars in April-September 2022, from 630 million U.S. dollars in April-September 2021,” said an official statement issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

A media report by “The Economic Times” said “though the government banned wheat exports in May, some shipments are allowed to meet food security needs of the countries that request for it.”

India’s decision to restrict wheat exports had drawn a lot of flak from various countries, citing the need amid disruptions in supply chains as the Russia-Ukraine conflict flared up. Both Russia and Ukraine are major wheat producers and exporters.
