Innospec’s innovative Octamar™ technology receives endorsement from ClassNK

Innospec Fuel Specialties has become the first fuel chemistry supplier to be awarded an ‘Innovation Endorsement’ by the leading ship classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (known as ClassNK).

ClassNK has independently verified that treating residual fuels with Octamar™ combustion catalysts can achieve an average fuel economy improvement of 2.7% and a 60% reduction in Particulate Matter emissions including black smoke, carbon and other harmful substances.

ClassNK awarded Innospec the prestigious Innovation Endorsement for Products & Solutions certification after examining the performance of Octamar™ Ultra HF, Octamar™ Complete, and Octamar™ F35C in eight separate field trails. Three tests using pure Octamar™ combustion catalysts demonstrated an improvement in fuel economy of between 2.1 to 3.0%. In four tests, using combinations of Octamar™ combustion catalysts with detergents/stabilisers, improvements in fuel economy of between 2.3 to 3.9% were recorded. The ‘in lab’ tests such as the FIA (Fixed Ignition Analysis) test were all verified by a third party.

Giorgio de Leonardis, Vice President EMEA, Innospec Fuel Specialties, said:

“This independent endorsement is a key milestone in demonstrating the unique value of Innospec products to our customers around the world. Our technologies are proven to help vessel owners and operators enhance their fleet performance. The Octamar™ range also provides a launching platform for current and future emission reduction strategies at a time when the shipping industry faces unprecedented challenges in meeting CO2 regulations. ClassNK has verified that treating fuel with Octamar™ improves fuel economy. We can clearly see that any improvement in fuel consumption will result in a like-for-like improvement in CO2 emissions. This is good news for vessels looking for solutions to the new measures used by CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) and ETS (Emission Trading Scheme). ”
