Massive container vessel docks in Port Elizabeth

Transnet Port Terminals recently welcomed one of the largest container vessels into the Ngqura Container Facility in Port Elizabeth.

The MSC Savannah is a container ship built in 2011 with a gross tonnage of 91621 tons and a length of 335m.

The vessel is en route to the Far East, having started its transshipment route in West Africa. It was berthed at Ngqura Container Terminal until Sunday. Transnet Port Terminals serviced the vessel, offloading 550 containers and loading a further 2922.

Velile Dube, Transnet Port Terminals’ general manager: Cape Channel, said: “We allocated maximum resources to ensure the quick turnaround of the MSC Savannah vessel. We were more than ready to effectively and efficiently handle the MSC Savannah vessel using our state-of-the-art equipment handled by our skilled workforce on hand.”

The Ngqura Container Terminal was designed to be a trans-shipment hub, servicing traffic from the East, South America and West African markets. It is the deepest container terminal in Southern Africa.
