Metro Ports Deploys Low-Emissions Locomotive

Stevedoring company Metro Ports has added a new ultra-low emissions locomotive to its on-dock rail operations on Pier G at the Port of Long Beach. Manufactured by Knoxville Locomotive Works in Tennessee, the Tier 4 switcher engine went into service immediately after its arrival Feb. 1.

“Our philosophy at Metro Ports is we need to stay ahead of the curve and deploy the most environmentally advanced equipment out there,” said Joe Vezzali, manager of business development at Metro Ports’ Long Beach facility.

Locomotives with a Tier 4 classification meet the U.S Environmental Protection Agency’s highest emissions standards for reducing nitrogen oxides, diesel particulate matter and reactive organic gases and have cleanest available engines on the market.

Nearly 40% of the $3.17 million locomotive was paid for by Metro Ports, which invested $1.2 million in the new engine. The remaining cost was covered by various grants procured with the help of the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Metro Ports operates a 21.5-acre terminal that handles dry bulk commodities.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union provides all labor at the terminal, including handling on-dock rail operations. Metro Ports has done business in the Port of Long Beach since 1923. As a tribute to the company’s upcoming centennial celebration, the new locomotive is numbered 1923.
