Much Larger Increase in Chinese Coal Burn Today; Traffic Remains Low

The daily coal burn rate at China’s six major coastal power plants has come in today at 421,000 tons. This is 7% higher than was seen yesterday and marks the strongest burn rate seen since January 30th. Compared to the start of the year, this burn rate is down by 46%. Traffic remains relatively unchanged from yesterday however. At 8AM today, road congestion in Shanghai was 41% lower than 2019’s average (yesterday was 43% lower).

In Beijing today, road congestion at 8AM was 43% lower than 2019’s average (yesterday was also 43% lower). In Shenzhen today, road congestion at 8AM was 37% lower than 2019’s average (yesterday was 36% lower). In Guangzhou today, road congestion at 8AM was 37% lower than 2019’s average (yesterday was also 37% lower). In Chengdu today, road congestion at 8AM was 44% lower than 2019’s average (yesterday was 41% lower).
