No threat to Ukrainian winter grain crops in January -farm ministry

Weather conditions in January have not posed a threat to Ukrainian winter grain crops, the agriculture ministry said on Monday.

“During the second 10 days of January, winter grain crops were in a state of winter dormancy, and no threats to their overwintering were observed,” the ministry said in a report.

Winter wheat dominates Ukraine’s winter grain area and has historically accounted for about 95% of all wheat grown in Ukraine. But the yield of winter wheat depends largely on favourable weather conditions from autumn to late spring.

Ukrainian farmers sowed around 4.2 million hectares of winter wheat for the 2024 harvest versus 4.5 million a year earlier.

First Deputy Minister Taras Vysotskiy said late last year that the country could harvest up to 20 million metric tons of winter wheat from the sown area.

Ukraine harvested more than 22 million tons of wheat last year.
