PCT among the Protagonists of the Greek Economy in 2024

PCT (Piraeus Container Terminal S.A.) was distinguished as a Greek Business Champion during the “Protagonists of the Greek Economy 2024” awards. The subsidiary company of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited was included among the “champions” in Greek business according to the evaluation criteria of the specific category, where in 2022 it recorded an increase in both turnover, by 23.19%, and profitability (EBITDA), by 43.18%, compared to the previous year. The award also comes in recognition of PCT’s contribution to the Greek economy (contribution to public revenue, support of domestic businesses and increase in employment) as well as the emergence of Piraeus as a leading maritime cargo port in Europe and the Mediterranean through a flagship investment program which in the 14 years of the company’s operation has exceeded 600 million euros.
In the “Protagonists of the Greek Economy” companies rewarded include those that take the lead by paving the way and supporting the Greek economy, while the selection is based on the official data of published economic reports as well as the general assessment of the market for the progress of the business in our country. It is noted that from 2009 to 2023, PCT’s fiscal benefit (including concession fees, taxes, insurance payments, etc.) amounts to EUR €961 million, while more than 2,500 direct jobs were created. In the 2023-2024 biennium alone, the Company has signed contracts totaling EUR €255 million with more than 600 suppliers, primarily from the local community. Also, since 2011, the Company has allocated more than €775,000 for the support of educational and charitable institutions, non-profit organizations and vulnerable groups of the population in the wider area of Piraeus.
The Greek Business Champion award was received by Capt. Wang Jihang, Managing Director of PCT at this year’s “Leaders of the Greek Economy 2024” awards ceremony, which took place on Monday July 15th in Glyfada, in the presence of hundreds of senior business executives and representatives of the academic community. “Each distinction, each reward for our contribution to the Greek economy is a recognition of the hard work and great steps that PCT has taken over the years, proving in practice that we are a significant, strategic investor and a pillar of development for the Greek economy. We continue with the same drive and commitment to bring the Port of Piraeus even higher, establishing it as the main southern gateway of Europe’s import and export trade and a transit hub of the wider region,” said Capt. Wang Jihang, Managing Director of PCT.
Piraeus Container Terminal, one of the leading container terminals in the Mediterranean region, is a company founded in Greece, and a fully controlled subsidiary of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited (the leading container terminal in the world). As of October 1st 2009, PCT has undertaken for 35 years the implementation of the Concession Agreement for Piers II and III, which, following an international tender process, PPA S.A. assigned to COSCO Pacific Limited (now COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited), to which the tender was awarded. Main activities of PCT is the provision of loading/unloading and storage services for imported and exported containers moving through the Port of Piraeus, including cargoes that use Piraeus only as a transit station (transshipment cargoes).
