Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), a joint venture between Malaysian based MMC Group and Hague based APM Terminals has been named as the award winner of the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2023, under the main Enterprise Category: “The Forward Faster Sustainability Award – Gender Equality”. PTP was also recognised under the Recognition Categories: “Partnership for the Goals Recognition” and “Pioneer Sustainable Development Action Recognition”.
Held at the Park Royal Collection Kuala Lumpur on 24 November 2023, the sustainability award ceremony was officiated by Dato Hajjah Hanifah Hajar Taib, Deputy Minister of Economy. Also in attendance were Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Distinguished Fellow, UN Sustainable Solutions Network at Sunway University and Adviser to the All Party Parliamentary Group on SDGs and Dr. Tunku Alina Alias, the National Advisory Panel of UNGCMYB.
PTP won The Forward Faster Sustainability Award – Gender Equality, for its outstanding commitment and leadership in advancing gender equality and promoting diversity and inclusion in the port; breaking down barriers, eliminating discrimination, and fostering a more equitable world for all genders in the port industry.
For the Partnership for the Goals Recognition category, PTP was recognised for its role in the Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) project, a government to government (G2G) initiative between Malaysia and Australia that aims to spearhead the country’s decarbonizing effort in the maritime industry and to foster inclusive growth through sustainable infrastructure in Southeast Asia via green bunkering hubs project.
PTP also won for the Pioneer Sustainable Development Action Recognition category, for its pioneering efforts in the diversity and inclusion initiatives in the nation. PTP made history as the first port in Malaysia to hire female marine pilots and female Rubber Tyre Gantry Operators (RTGO).
PTP Chairman, Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh stated that PTP is proud and honoured to be recognised by UNGCMYB for its commitment to sustainability journey.
“As Malaysia’s leading transshipment terminal and amongst the world’s busiest ports, we take pride in trailblazing the steps of sustainability.”
“Sustainability is core to our business, and we are committed to finding innovative ways to empower the agenda. This means that sustainability is embedded into everything that we do – from how we manage our business, to how we operate as a terminal operator, to how we support and contribute to the societal development objectives of the country.”
“We will continue to take proactive measures to enhance and coordinate our future sustainability efforts as well as to take a leap in extending PTP’s leadership role in sustainable port development in the state and country.” added Tan Sri Che Khalib.
PTP Chief Executive Officer, Marco Neelsen remarked that winning multiple awards in the Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2023 is a significant accomplishment, reflecting PTP’s commitment to transparency in their sustainability journey that will help strengthen communications with stakeholders and consequently, help to improve business performances.
“From the time our sustainability journey was established, we have made significant progress in sustainable development over a short period of time, but we believe that there is a lot more we can do. We constantly challenge ourselves to explore new ways of delivering our services to fulfil the needs of society while minimising adverse impacts on our environment, our people, and our business.
“PTP is therefore keen to continue meeting our stakeholders’ expectations by becoming a reference point for the industry and pushing forward ESG standards. In terms of strategy, ESG is already a key point of differentiation for PTP in comparison to our peers in the region.”
The Forward Faster Sustainability Awards programme (previously known as Sustainability Performance Awards) was initiated by UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) to recognise the continuous efforts of all its member companies and to inspire others to make sustainability an integral part of their business strategies.
Earlier this month, PTP had also successfully published its 2022 Sustainability Report to guide all stakeholders on PTP’s current and future sustainability journey.
