Posidonia 2018 Special: TV Interviews by Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide

Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide (www.hellenicshippingnews.com) was at the heart of this year’s Posidonia, as has been the case since 2006. For this year’s event, we prepared, together with our associates and clients a series of interviews on all the major trends and topics of discussion, from the new propulsion technologies and sulphur fuel compliance rules, to the looming digitalisation of shipping and its benefits for all parties involved.

As the home of Greek shipping, Posidonia is the gateway to the owners of the largest merchant fleet in the world. Carrying a legacy of over 3000 years, Greece is the top shipowning nation by value, at $100 billion and operates 20% of the global and 50% of the European capacity.

Posidonia 2018 was held from June 4 – 8 at the Athens Metropolitan Expo. A total of 1,825 exhibitors from 101 countries and territories participated and 22,366 visitors made their appearance. Posidonia is organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Insular Policy, the Union of Greek Shipowners and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping and with the support of the Municipality of Piraeus and the Greek Shipping Co-operation Committee.

International Registries’ directors are optimistic that the 2050 targets set by the IMO’s recent meeting, on shipping’s decarbonisation are achievable. In an exclusive interview with Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide, the company’s executives highlighted the fact that over the next 10-15 years, ships’ propulsion technologies will see a dramatic change. However, as Mr. Theofilos Xenakoudis pointed out ahead of the 2020 low-sulphur rule, safety issues need to be addressed.

ABB Turbocharging Greece and Cyprus formed a business partnership with Cyprus’ Multimarine, a modern ship repair yard. The companies will work together on servicing existing clients’ vessels. “We wanted to have a partner in the island to serve the growing demand from our clients and we’ve achieved this”, says Mr. Ioannis Smyrneos, LBU Manager for ABB.

Theophanis Theophanous, Managing Director, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM Greece)

Bernhard Schulte Greece has built a solid business in the Greek market, managing all types of vessels from LNGs to dry bulk carriers, with a safety-first and zero losses approach. BSM has a pool of over 20,000 well-trained seafarers, able to cover all types of a ship’s crewing needs. Managing LNG ships will be a booming business in the near future says Mr. Theophanis Theophanous, Managing Director of BSM Greece.

Ship-repair services specialist Newport Shipping opened a new office in Athens.
