ReCAAP Information Sharing Centre, German Federal Police in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community and Federal Foreign Office Organised Conference to Enhance Regional Cooperation to Combat Piracy and Sea Robbery

Germany became the Contracting Party of ReCAAP ISC in August 2021 and has been contributing towards the fight against piracy and armed robbery against ships in Asian region. Since the 18th Governing Council meeting of the international organisation – ReCAAP (Regional Cooperation Agreement on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery against Ships in Asia) – for the first time Germany received delegates of the contracting states in Berlin, Germany for the Regional Cooperation Conference; co-organised by the ReCAAP ISC and German Federal Police (ReCAAP ISC Focal Point for Germany) with cooperation of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Community (BMI) and the Federal Foreign Office (AA).

The Conference was held between 09 and 10 December 2024 and attended by the ReCAAP ISC Contracting Parties from Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Norway and Great Britain. The Conference goal was an exchange of established methods in fighting piracy and armed attacks against vessels. With the spirit of ReCAAP, the Federal Police Germany shared its own experience with the member states and evolved valuable approaches for prevention, containment and way forward in tackling transnational maritime crime – piracy.

Mr. Krishnaswamy Natarajan, Executive Director of ReCAAP ISC, mentioned that – Piracy and armed robbery against ships requires the commitment and collective effort of all stakeholders to deter and suppress. The conference highlighted the vital importance of multilateral cooperation in safeguarding maritime routes and enabled us to bridge gaps and exchange best practices in piracy prevention. Through information sharing, capacity building, and cooperative engagements, ReCAAP ISC continues to strengthen partnerships and advance efforts to combat piracy and armed robbery at sea.
