Royal Society of Marine Artists: Chairman’s message as Baltic Exchange Award is presented

Last month I had the honour to be invited to give the Baltic Exchange Award, one of eight prizes at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London. The winning portrait was selected from among dozens of entries for an outstanding work related to the maritime industry.

The Baltic Award went to William Carney for his painting of Royal Yacht Britannia in the Pool of London – under a fog of calm evening stillness, his work captures the business of boats tending other boats as they return to safe moorings after a voyage at sea. This could have been the same scene for any ship in any port but happens to be in the port of London under the watch of Tower Bridge – it is a very strong example of the submissions received which were all of the highest order.

The exhibition takes place at the Mall Galleries which is the home of British fine art. Many paintings were of British coastline which would be familiar to Baltic members and I encourage all members to view the prize winning pieces from this fascinating exhibition, some of which are available for sale, here.

The Society’s President, John Scott Martin commented:

“The Selection Committee of the Royal Society of Marine Artists shortlisted three works for the Baltic Exchange Award from over 1,000 entries to our 76th Annual Exhibition. We looked for works with a commercial shipping orientation. They in turn were submitted to the Chairman of the Baltic Exchange, Denis Petropoulos, to make his final selection.

“Denis chose a work by William Carney ROI, ‘Britannia, Pool of London’, a small but stunning oil painting with Tower Bridge in the background. Denis met and discussed the work with William at the exhibition’s Private View, where he presented the award to him.”
