Silverstream Technologies wins Plimsoll Award for Innovation

Silverstream Technologies, the pioneer of air lubrication technology for the shipping industry, has been awarded the 2016 Professional Mariner Plimsoll Award for Innovation. The award recognises the company’s ground-breaking air lubrication technology, the Silverstream™ System, for its contribution to improving efficiency in the shipping industry, as well as Silverstream’s success in instilling credibility in a viable clean technology following one of the most rigorous testing and sea trials for a clean technology ever seen within the shipping industry.

The award was presented to Silverstream’s CEO Noah Silberschmidt at the special awards luncheon in front of 300 delegates at this year’s Connecticut Maritime Association (CMA) Shipping 2016 conference in Stamford, USA.

Accepting the award, Noah Silberschmidt commented:

‘We are pleased and honoured to receive the Professional Mariner Plimsoll Innovation award. Silverstream Technologies believes that proven air lubrication technology plays a critical role in driving operational, energy, and environmental efficiencies for ship owners and operators. Through our collaboration with highly respected industry leaders including charterers, ship owners, yards, class societies, and technology partners, as well as the commercial orders that we have delivered, we have been able to demonstrate the viability of the Silverstream™ System as one of the most effective clean technologies available on the market.”

The Silverstream™ System works by producing a thin layer of micro bubbles to create an ‘air carpet’ along the hull of the vessel. This reduces friction with the water, providing net efficiency savings in excess of 5%, and in turn reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions. The system can be retrofitted in just 14 days and has a payback period of between two to five years, depending on various factors such as vessel size, speed and operational profile. It is wholly unique as it is the only technology that is applicable to both newbuilds and existing vessels.

On completion of the company’s landmark sea trials conducted with Shell, the first commercial order was secured with Norwegian Cruise Lines at the Meyer Werft ship yard in Germany where the Silverstream™ System was successfully installed on the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) vessel Norwegian Joy. The company has since seen a rapid uptake for both newbuilds and retrofits with some of the world’s leading shipping lines.

The Plimsoll Awards are named after Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898), a British Member of Parliament who fought against unsafe maritime industry practices. ‘Plimsoll marks’ on ships – lines indicating the maximum safe load of a vessel – are an enduring testimony to his pursuit of safety at sea.

The awards have been held since 2001, and Silverstream Technologies now joins an exclusive list of companies to have received the award, including FLIR Systems (for their thermal imaging systems that are instrumental in finding sailors who have fallen overboard) and PortVision, whose web-portal allows customers to track vessel movements at port.
