Subcontractors urge gov’t to probe heavy-handed conduct by major shipbuilders
About 50 subcontractors of major shipbuilders held a rally this week, calling for the government to thoroughly investigate the heavy-handed business practices of local shipyards.
The subcontractors of Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Samsung Heavy Industries Co. criticized the shipbuilders for allegedly violating the country’s subcontracting law.
The subcontractors also accused the three major shipbuilders of forcing them to draw up false contracts to cut costs.
Daewoo Shipbuilding has been under investigation by the nation’s anti-trust watchdog for not paying some subcontract fees to its suppliers, according to the subcontractors.
Meanwhile, Hyundai Heavy denied the allegations raised by the subcontractors.
