ThPA S.A.: Underwater Sea Cleaning at the Thessaloniki waterfront

ThPA S.A., continuing its initiatives for the protection of the marine environment and the promotion of a “green” future for the younger generations, carried out today, in cooperation with MEPP (Mediterranean Company Environmental Protection), an Underwater Sea Cleaning Action for the first time at the Thessaloniki waterfront, open to the public, in the presence of the Secretary General of Maritime Affairs and Ports, Mr. Evangelos Kyriazopoulos.

The action took place along the seafront, from Pier 1 of port of Thessaloniki to the White Tower, in cooperation and with the support of: Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), Antipollution of V Group, Hellenic Environmental Center S.A. (HEC), Hill International, Optima Bank, Rogan Associates, Pfizer, Alpha Bank, TIF- Helexpo and Samaras & Partners. The event was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy, the Ministry of Interior (Sector of Macedonia and Thrace), the Region of Central Macedonia, the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Hellenic Ports Association.

With the participation of 39 specialized divers, the seabed along the seafront (1.3 km) was cleaned of objects that have no place in the sea and disrupt the balance of the marine ecosystem. The objects that were recovered will be recorded, sorted and sent for environmentally proper management, and where possible, they will be reused.

The public along with representatives of bodies and authorities closely observed the process of diving, recovery, and collection of the finds while experiencing the importance of preserving a clean marine environment. After the completion of the recovery process, an award ceremony was held to honor the volunteers and supporters of the action.

The Executive Chairman of the BoD of ThPA S.A., Athanasios Liagkos, commented: “I would like to congratulate all the volunteers and thank all the bodies, especially the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Mayor, Mr. Stelios Angeloudis, as well as the Hellenic Coast Guard, for their valuable contribution, without which the implementation of today’s action would not have been possible. In the context of our sustainability strategy, we care for the protection of the marine environment, and we constantly aim at actions and synergies that offer knowledge, experience and value for society”.
