Tug boat operators at Greek Piraeus Port to begin two-day strike Wed

Workers operating tug boats at the Greek port of Piraeus will strike for two days starting Wednesday, which will restrict bunkering operations at the port and could create some tightness on the prompt, boosting weak bunker prices, market sources said Tuesday.

There will be “no loading tomorrow and the day after,” a bunker trading source in Piraeus said Tuesday morning. “Tug boats won’t be operating and as such the barges won’t be able to load.” There is likely to be congestion at the port until the weekend, he said.

A second source said news of the strike had prevented prices from weakening further since it “creates some tightness.”

Prices in Piraeus were indicated just marginally lower Tuesday compared with Monday, amid a slight rebound in Brent prices and having seen strong losses previously.

However, because the strike was announced last week most suppliers had already scheduled their loadings, the first source said.
