U.S. Jobless Claims Dropped Last Week

The number of Americans applying for first-time unemployment benefits fell last week, remaining at historically low levels. Here are the report’s key takeaways:

–Initial jobless claims were down by 9,000 to 214,000 in the week ending Jan. 4, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal expected jobless claims to clock in at 220,000.

–Weekly jobless claims can be volatile. The four-week moving average decreased by 9,500 to 224,000.

–Continuing claims, those filed by workers unemployed for longer than a week, rose by 75,000 to 1.803 million in the week ending Dec. 28.
