U.S. Jobless Claims Fell 71K to 199K in Nov. 20 Week

Jobless claims fell sharply to 199,000 last week, below the average level before the Covid-19 pandemic, marking a milestone in the labor market’s recovery.

Worker filings for initial unemployment benefits, a proxy for layoffs, dropped 71,000 in the week ended Nov. 20 from the prior week, the Labor Department reported Wednesday.

Claims averaged 218,000 a week in 2019.
