WFW further expands Maritime Disputes practice with new London Partner hire

Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW”) is delighted to announce that well-known maritime disputes expert Mike Phillips has joined the firm as a Partner in London. He moves from Stephenson Harwood, where he has been a partner for 12 years, six of which as head of their Marine & International Trade group.

Mike specialises in maritime disputes, including shipping, international trade, shipbuilding and offshore construction, and contentious ship finance. His clients include banks, shipowners, shipyards, traders and P&I clubs/insurers who come to him for his knowledge, experience and commercial acumen. On the contentious ship finance side, Mike represents leading ship finance banks in a wide array of disputes arising from both pre- and post-delivery finance.

WFW London Dispute Resolution Co-Head Andrew Ward commented: “I’m very excited to welcome Mike to WFW and the Dispute Resolution team. He’s a talented and experienced maritime disputes specialist whose areas of expertise align perfectly with one of our firm’s core sectors. His arrival further strengthens our global maritime disputes offering and is testament to WFW’s growing reputation for dispute resolution advice across all our key areas of expertise”.

Global Maritime Sector Co-Head Lindsey Keeble added: “Expanding our maritime disputes capability is central to our commitment to continue broadening our maritime practice’s offering in line with our ‘services into sector’ strategy. I’m delighted that we’re beginning 2021 with the announcement that a highly regarded Partner such as a Mike is joining us”.

Mike said: “With the largest dedicated maritime practice of any law firm in the world, joining WFW is a fantastic opportunity for me to both reach out to potential new clients and better service my existing portfolio. I look forward to working with all my new colleagues and helping entrench WFW’s growing reputation as the ‘go to’ law firm for maritime disputes”.
