Wilson Sons achieves the highest safety excellence rating in the Tugboat division

Wilson Sons, the largest port and maritime logistics operator in the Brazilian market, reaches another landmark in HSE management (Health, Safety and Environment). The Tugboat business unit has achieved world-class status in safety, a standard of excellence defined by DuPont, a world reference consultancy in the sector.

With a fleet of 80 tugboats, more than 800 employees of which 567 are seafarers, the business unit managed to reduce the accident rate with lost time by 97% in the last nine years. Last year, the rate of accidents with lost time was 0.29 and, in the three-year period, 0.41, both below the index of 0.50, a benchmark for the performance of a world-class company. In addition, in 2019, this index was already below 0.50, at 0.33.

In the last two years, 14 campaigns focused on HSE were carried out and more than 75 thousand hours of training were accumulated. Corporate social network, podcasts and games are some of the communication tools used to reinforce HSE practices in the Wilson Sons Tugboat division.

“JAM, the corporate network that connects the Group’s eight business units, was one of the instruments used by us. The platform gave us the freedom to develop and provide multimedia products, which are more attractive and explanatory, in addition to streamlining various processes, with the possibility of online access of materials for seafarers on board”, explains Marcio Castro, executive director of the Tugboat division.

Among the campaigns carried out are “Ligado em Segurança”, a video contest (in which employees themselves present safe practices and procedures on their tugs); game with simulations for identification and correction of deviations, demonstrating safe behavior on board; short videos presented by HSE professionals; “QSMS Compartilha” about safety standards, in addition to the “Alerta de SMS” podcast, with reports of occurrences and lessons learned.

“For customers, a world-class company, with safety as its value, represents efficiency in operations, credibility and trust. As mentioned in one of the principles of our culture program: security is good business for companies”, highlights Castro.

WS+ Program
The WS+ Program was created in 2011, with the objective of developing a safety culture, based on the recognition of the responsibilities of each employee, discipline in compliance with the rules, concept of owner, engagement of leaders, management of deviations and governance of safety performance. Today, all eight of the Company’s businesses are part of the program.

“Wilson Sons has been carrying out major investments in security for ten years with the WS+ Program. The advances have been significant, and we are now celebrating this new milestone in the Tugboat division. It is an expressive result that demonstrates efficiency in risk management and, above all, preserving the health and integrity of our employees and the environment”, explains Castro.

In 2019, the Group reached the level of Interdependence, the maximum stage in the degree of perception of safety culture, according to research carried out in partnership with DuPont. From more than 1,000 companies in the world that carry out the assessment, only 50 have achieved this classification.
