Iraq has year worth of wheat reserves -PM Sudani

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani during a televised interview on Monday said his country has a year’s worth of wheat reserves thanks to a successful agricultural season.

Iraq, with a population of more than 43 million, requires between 4.5 million and 5.0 million tons of wheat per year, according to its agriculture ministry.

A bumper harvest in 2023 was partly enabled by a shift toward growing wheat in desert areas using groundwater instead of water from Iraq’s dwindling rivers, as the country experienced its worst drought on record.
