Coronavirus update: the implications for businesses and international commerce

The Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak has now spread from China to Europe, the Middle East and North America. As a result, Covid-19 is having a significant global impact on both the business and human levels.

The international reach of the outbreak mean that no country or business sector is necessarily immune from the financial and societal consequences if Covid-19 continues to spread and is not brought under control sooner rather than later. Some of the business sectors that are already feeling the effects include manufacturing, shipping, commodities, insurance, offshore and construction, aviation and the global markets. Concern over the financial repercussions of Covid-19 should not, however, be allowed to detract from the human and personal cost of the virus and the need to have appropriate work and health systems and strategies for employees, public spaces and communities as a whole.
