German Economic Expectations Increase Ahead of Expectations in September -ZEW Survey

German economic expectations have risen again in September after going up strongly in August, the ZEW economic research institute said Tuesday.

The measure of economic expectations went up to 77.4 in September from 71.5 in August, the institute said. The outcome is above economists’ forecast of 70.0 points in a survey by The Wall Street Journal.

The assessment of the current economic situation in Germany has also improved, rising to minus 66.2 in September from 81.3 points in August, the ZEW institute said. This reading is better than economists’ forecast of minus 72.0 points.

“Experts continue to expect a noticeable recovery of the German economy,” said Achim Wambach, president of the ZEW institute.

Mr. Wambach said stalled Brexit talks and rising Covid-19 cases didn’t dampen the positive mood.
