Ukrainian Railways testing intermodal shipping to Europe with Rail Cargo Austria, VTG

Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia, abbreviated as UZ) has carried out a trial intermodal run to transport semitrailers along the Kiev-Budapest route with Rail Cargo Austria (RCA) and German rail company VTG, Ukrainian media reported, citing UZ.

“With this run we have begun to implement a project for intermodal shipments between Ukraine and European countries and plan to further jointly develop this route to Vienna, as was recently agreed,” UZ commercial operations and logistics director Timofei Murakhovsky was quoted as saying in the press release.

The trial run was carried out under a memorandum signed by UZ and RCA. UZ reached an agreement with RCA in September to develop intermodal services between Ukraine and Austria.

The shipment was made on UZ flatcars with subsequent transhipment to European gauge 1435 mm flatcars provided by VTG. The locomotives after transhipment were provided by RCA.

UZ also said that next week it is planning a trial intermodal railway to truck run on the Kaunas-Kiev-Kaunas route in cooperation with Lithuanian railway operator LTG.
